Perkins Engine Identification Guide

In many cases it is necessary to identify the Perkins® Engine Number in order to ascertain the correct engine kit for an application. All Perkins® Engines should contain one of the two following formats for engine numbering (dependent on the year of manufacture):

Pre 1978 Engine Numbers:

This system, which consists of a maximum of 13 digits, was used from 1966 to 1978. Another numbering method was used prior to 1966, which utilized a digit number with no reference to engine series.

How to identify your 4WD Axle

There are a number of different models of Carraro and ZF Axles - the besy way to identify your axle is from the metal I.D. plate which can be found riveted to the main axle beam.

Below are examples of the types of plates you will be looking for on each manufacturer's axle.

ZF Axle I.D. Plate

Type 1

1 - Axle Type

2 - Axle Serial Number

3 - ZF Parts List Number

4 - Overall axle ratio / version with or without ZF - limited slip differential

5 - Type of Lubricant

6 - Lubricant Specification



Type 2

1 - Axle Type

2 - Ratio

3 - Unit-No (Serial-No.)

4 - ZF - Parts List - No.

5 - Customer Part No. (Vehicle Ident-No.)

6 - ZF - List of Lubrications
